Onyx Countertops And Their Transforming Colors
Onyx is a semi-precious stone that has a special translucent property. When you focus light on its surface, it will suddenly turn to brighter hues. This change can also help lift the spirits of many people. This is the special property of onyx which makes it a very popular decorative material. Many entertainment places have installed onyx countertops on their premises just to infuse the right ambience that their clients relish.
It is onyx's calcareous composition that gives it its translucent properties. It is basically made of calcium carbonates that allows light to easily pass thru the stone structure. And this is also why it is a softer stone than granite. Therefore they are best used for decorative purposes only. In fact, onyx is traditionally used to decorate the floors, walls and altars of churches. Many jewelers also make use of the beauty of onyx by creating exquisite pieces of expensive jewelry and similar trinkets.
As in all stone countertops, you need to seal and laminate the surfaces of onyx countertops before using them. This process will seal the pores and fissures that the stone may have and prevent water and dirt from going in. Allowing these to enter the stone can result in damage to the stone structure. Regular sealing and laminating at least once a year is also required if you want to use your onyx countertops for a long time.
Building an onyx countertop will cost you somewhere from $100 to $500 per square foot. If this is over you budget then there are many ways to get the same effect at a lower cost. Onyx tiles are now available at more affordable prices. You can build an onyx countertop using onyx tiles. At the very least, it will only cost you about $4.99 per square foot. These tiles are smaller (12 inches by 12 inches) and are thinner than onyx slabs. But they still have the translucent colors that you can make use of. However, you need to consider that onyx countertops made of onyx tiles must have structural reinforcements to make them strong and functional.
