The Lionel Train Empire - Ready For The Future
In America, when thinking of model trains one can't help but think of Lionel, the company that since it's inception in 1900, made model trains popular with the masses. Although the company has come very close to being dissolved over the last twenty years, today Lionel train sets are being made by Lionel LLC which is the owner of the Lionel trademark which has become synonymous with toy trains since their earliest days.
With a new outlook and a new corporate structure, Lionel is able to do well in the modern world of tomorrow while keeping that which we know and love about the Lionel model trains of yesteryear and creating high quality products with tradition and innovation that all can enjoy and appreciate. Model trains haven't enjoyed the main stream interest they once had but they have not disappeared completely, in fact they are enjoying somewhat of a resurgence of interest. With more options to play with, especially video games and other electronics, it's no wonder that children's interest today in a model train set is not going to be as high as it was in the golden era of model railroading.
Most of us can think back to the day when we were children and Lionel model trains were very much a part of our childhood. Remembering the huge box and the bright gift wrapping of your first train set is a great memory for many people. As adults with these early happy experiences, the fondness for model trains and railroad layouts remains. Being an adult with an adult income enables us to realize many of our model train desires that date all the way back to our childhood.
After experiencing it's glory days, almost dissolving into insolvency and rising up from the brink stronger than before, Lionel reemerged into the world of model trains only to find that there are now other prominent model train companies that share the market now. Companies like MTH are really upping the ante with their hyper realistic locomotives and sound effects. This competition is good for Lionel as they have been able meet the market need for more realism and complexity in response to other competitors. In any case, even with new competition and other manufacturers on the model train scene, model railroaders of all kinds appreciate the history and contributions, past, present and future of Lionel model trains.
