How to Add Spice to Your Kitchen Inexpensively
If you're looking into new cabinets for your kitchen, you might not have given a lot of thought to the hardware you'll choose. You mainly dream of restoring your kitchen with exciting new finishes that can give it the luster that it currently lacks. In reality, your kitchen's hardware is as important of a choice as the wood used in the cabinetry, as they can make or break the look of a cabinet and are a good indicator of cabinetry lifespan.
When making a hardware decision for your kitchen cabinets, you'll have hundreds of possible options. There are millions of pulls, knobs and handles to choose from. You also have options for drawer slides, latches, and catches. Some of them come in stainless steel and other are made of brass.
Though there are thousands of possible styles, there are thousands more finishes available. Powder coating is available for every possible finish and color. This brings up another decision, the shape of the hardware. Just about any shape is available and they are no longer limited to hexagons, rectangles, squares or round shapes!
You will also find that there are so many sizes available, that you may have to be careful if you are simply refinishing your cabinetry. The size of the existing holes will have to be carefully measured in order that your new kitchen cabinet hardware will fit.
As to finishes, and materials used you will even find pulls made of satin nickel. Actually, these use die-cast metal, usually nickel plated zinc. A coat of laquer will add a bit of wear-resistance to the metal, after hand-sanding it for a clean, well-brushed feel. Antique pewter pulls and knobs are a beautiful emphasis to give kitchen cabinetry, and some of them even feature an oil-rubbed bronze highlight.
By using a copper or bronze finish on die cast metal, you can inexpensively get the look and feel of much more expensive copper hinges! Cabinet hardware can use other materials, too. This includes glass, ceramics, and other materials. Getting back to the copper hinges, you may choose to use actual copper hinges and other hardware.
Some can be made from oak, ceramic material, or high quality plastic. Perhaps you are more whimsical, and would like pulls and handles that are fashioned to look like the shape of winding vines, seashells, and geckos. The limit is your imagination, as there are a variety of image-based hardware available. Other designs are hand-distressed, giving them the old-fashioned look of classic Americana appeal. For a more modern look some people prefer pulls and handles that have incorporated granite in them.
You may decide to use hardware that has to be pushed before it's opened. You might choose push plates for these cabinets, which can be great ornamental additions to your kitchen and can be very inexpensive.
